Shadrack Masuku

... was born in 1976 at Piggs Peak, Swaziland, as the youngest of five brothers into a family of artists. In order to become a sculptor, he followed the example of two of his brothers. Already at the age of eight, he started his hard way to become an artist by creating animals from soapstone on the roadside in the Highveld of southern Africa and selling them to passing tourists.

But his natural talent, combined with a sometimes dreamy nature and determined diligence, paved the way for success. From a young age he became an artist who had been recognized and respected in southern Africa, which achieved remarkable prices, especially with his large sculptures made of jacarana wood of high artistic value. Numerous of his works are located in private collections, including the Luciano Benetton collection "imago mundi" or the Oppenheimer Collection, alongside masters such as Picasso.

Shadrack appreciates the liberties of semi-abstract art. His visual language is "dreamlike" and allows the viewer to go into extraterrestrial spheres where his works seem to float in another universe. At times frightening, then again euphoric or full of humor, his works explore worlds of miscarriages and fabulous beings, which at first sight appear human, but on closer inspection rather mysterious. Shadrack often connects an impressive external beauty with enigmatic, also disharmonic elements and, in part, a deep irony, which, besides the pure sight, gives plenty of reason to think.

Shadrack himself says, "It comes from somewhere from my deepest soul, a magical place" or "I feel that as a god-given talent, often I myself am surprised by the result and wonder where that comes from." And further: "I love the work, but for me It does not feel like work at all. It is rather a passion, a vocation. Even if I did not make money with my art, I would create art every day! "

Shadrack has worked in the well-known House on Fire (event center with art gallery) from 2007 to 2014 in Malkerns, Swaziland. He started his own business in early 2014.
